Before World War II, more than a thousand wooden synagogues dotted the shtetls of Eastern Europe; many had stood for centuries. For decades, the world believed all these structures were lost. Then, a few years ago, a team from Hebrew University discovered six of these synagogues in Lithuania. Recently, Albert Barry travelled to Lithuania and Latvia with a film crew to document these few remaing examples. While there, he and his crew discovered four more examples. This film tells the story of the synagogues and life that surrounded them before the War and what has happened th them in the last 50 years. Featuring many photos of the period and interviews with the few remaining residents of these shtetls, this is a historical document that should be inany documentary collection.Narrated by Theodore Bikel, this video is available in Yiddish or English.
