Each song on this Cd--recorded between 1937 and 1946--reflects apart of this historical identity that political adventures will never manage ot erase.The beautiful sorrowful style of Cheikh Zouzou (track #1), obviously influenced by the style of the Synagogue, seemed to prophesise in 1938 the tragedy that plunged Algerian music into mourning. Like his friend Cheikh Raymond Leyris, he was to be one of the Jewish Algerian stars of the 50's, but many other musicians from this community would not get their chance.Messaoud El Medioni, known as Saouk"El Ouahrani" (selections # 4 and #5),was arrested in Marseille and gased by the Nazis in Sobibor. It was Saoud who discoverd and musically trained a 13 year old blind girl, Reinette El Ouahrania (selections #6 and #7), who was to become a monument of Jewish-Arab music under the name of Reinette L'Oranaise.The accompanying booklet includes photos and detailed notation in French and English.= 1.
