Order #: 01137 Born in Baghdad, Filfel Gourgy had the beginings of a vvery prosperous career in Iraz. thoughJewish, he was educated i in Muslim school inacquiring a classical and musical Mulsim education which eventually bestowed on him the priviledge of reading the Koran to millions of Arab viewers on the eve of Ramadan on Israel Television. In 1950, the situation for Jews deteriorated, and Gourgy, who's Jewish identity had been concealed, was smuggled out of Iraq and immigrated to Israel where he continued to perform for the growing Iraqi communit. Ironically, his anme became know among the Muslims in Iraq and Jordan who listed to the Voice of Israel in Arabic.
