The Music included in this 2 CD collection covers the main types of sacred music practiced by urban Moroccan Jews in the 1950s. Most of the examples are drawn from th Andalusian Hebrew tradition, particularly the setting of Hebrew sacred poems to Arabo-Andallusioan molodies. These field recordings, collected by Paul Bowles in the cities of Essaouri and Meknes in 1959 are presented in four blocks of songs:1) Piyyutim (religious poems) from the compendium of religious poetry, Shir Yedidut, which reflects on the tradtion of the cities of Marrakesh and Essaouira: 2) Piyyiuim from another compendium of religious poetry, Ysimah Yisrael, reflecting the tradition of Meknes: 3) a complete synagogue sevice for the conclusion of the Sabbath; 4) adaptations ofmodern Hebrew texts to the melodies of popular North-African songs. The enclosed booklet includes detailed notes on the selections.
